Official figures prepared for the incoming Housing Minister Phil Twyford, show a shortfall of 45,000 houses - A figure that is based on homes that have actually been built and not just on the consents that have been issued.
The majority of the housing need is from Auckland, however the second and third cities that are in most need are Hamilton and Wellington.
The estimated figures as of the 1st of June this year, indicate that there had been 9,725 homes built but to meet the need for housing, 18,007 homes should have been built.
